Material Handling Success StoryA case study in how material handling makes cents!John Wayne Airport (Orange County, California) was the first airport to fully integrate the federally mandated, 100% baggage inspection program – inline and automatically. Fly out of JWA and you will notice there are no lines before one reaches the lines at the ticket counter. The flying public checks their bags where they are whisked away into the fully automated, baggage screening and equipment handling area. It is a marvel to watch the efficient and thorough inspection of all luggage preparing to depart on their intended flight. With automation came challenges – critical to the throughput of the screening machines is the accurate and complete scan of the luggage, to ensure that only articles requiring a more thorough hand check were indeed checked. Central to this issue was the proper alignment of the baggage prior to entering the screening equipment. Additional situations arose as luggage navigating the system, were dismembered as a result of the additional conveyor merges, turns and straighteners. All of the “dangly” things hanging off luggage were prime targets for removal and congestion! Finally, as luggage got caught and shut the system down or as baggage was scanned incompletely and the backlog of hand checked luggage was building, passenger luggage was missing flights. This automated system proved to be an automatic headache – requiring manual intervention at all levels! Airport Operations, Tenant Airlines and Federal TSA Employees were scrambling to cope with the “new” technology. A new footprint was required to maximize the scanning envelope in addition to providing a known point for straightening and alignment while traversing the system, a lower profile was needed to help with the ergonomics of placing all checked luggage in the larger tubs and resin was key to insure the developing technology didn’t deem the tote itself as a hazard! Project Managers from JWA and the CP Products design team developed a tub that answered all the questions! As with most items, the most important issue boils down to money! To alleviate the alignment issues associated with proper scanning and efficient throughput, JWA stationed personnel at the inlet side of all scanners to ensure proper spacing and alignment. In labor savings alone, the In-Line Screening Tubs paid for themselves in less than 2 (two) months! Additional benefits as a result of the 100% usage of all checked baggage include:
In a very real cents (and dollars), material handling is a viable solution to challenges unknown! Please feel free to give us a call or e-mail to see what we can do for you! |
